Emerald - May Birthstone

Emerald is one of the four precious gemstones — alongside diamond, ruby, and sapphire — and it has been one of the most desired stones in the world for over four thousand years. Its green is unlike any other: rich, deep, and intensely saturated, with a warmth that distinguishes it from the cooler greens of peridot or tourmaline. For anyone born in May, it's a birthstone with a weight of history and meaning behind it that few others can match.

What does emerald mean?

Emerald has been associated with growth, renewal, love, and wisdom throughout recorded history. Ancient Egyptians mined it in the Eastern Desert and considered it a symbol of eternal life — Cleopatra was famously devoted to emeralds and claimed the Egyptian mines as her own. The Incas worshipped it as a sacred stone. In medieval Europe it was believed to reveal truth and protect against evil. The Romans dedicated it to Venus, goddess of love and beauty.

Today its symbolism has distilled into a few consistent themes: renewal and fresh beginnings, deep and enduring love, clarity of vision, and the vitality of spring. The last feels instinctively right for a May birthstone — emerald's green carries the same energy as the month itself.

Why is emerald May's birthstone?

Emerald's association with May comes from its long connection to Taurus (which runs through most of May) and Gemini (which begins in late May). Both signs are associated with growth, receptivity, and a strong connection to the natural world — qualities that align naturally with emerald's colour and symbolism. The stone was also traditionally associated with Mercury, the ruling planet of Gemini, which gave it an additional intellectual and communicative dimension.

The stone itself — what to know

Emerald is a variety of the mineral beryl — the same family as aquamarine, which is the March birthstone. Its distinctive green comes from trace amounts of chromium and vanadium within the crystal structure. This is what separates a true emerald from other green beryls: without chromium, a green beryl is beautiful, but it is not technically an emerald.

Most emeralds contain natural inclusions — internal fractures, crystals, and growth patterns that formed as the stone developed. In the emerald trade, these are called the jardin (French for garden) and are considered a mark of authenticity rather than a flaw. A flawless emerald is extraordinarily rare — more so than a flawless diamond — which is part of why the finest specimens are so valuable.

Emerald sits at 7.5–8 on the Mohs scale — harder than most everyday surfaces but softer than diamond or sapphire. It's well suited to necklaces and earrings for daily wear; in rings, a protective setting is advisable.

The finest emeralds in the world come from Colombia, where the stone has been mined for centuries. Zambian emeralds are also highly regarded, with a slightly deeper, cooler green. Brazilian, Ethiopian, and Zimbabwean emeralds are also commercially significant, each with their own colour characteristics.

Emerald and healing — what people believe

In crystal traditions, emerald is consistently associated with the heart chakra — it's seen as a stone of love, compassion, and emotional balance. It's described as grounding the wearer in the present, opening them to deep connection, and supporting both giving and receiving love with equal ease. For those going through grief, transition, or a period of emotional difficulty, emerald is often recommended as a stone of gentle restoration.

How to wear emerald jewellery

Emerald's deep green is rich enough to anchor almost any look. It pairs beautifully with gold — the warm tones bring out the yellow-green undertones of many stones and create a classically luxurious combination. With silver, emerald reads cooler and more contemporary. Both work; the choice comes down to the wearer's existing preferences.

As a necklace stone, emerald works at any length — a smaller stone as a pendant at collarbone length, or a larger piece as a statement. As earrings, the colour catches the light and frames the face well. Browse our emerald jewellery collection and the full May birthstone range, handmade in our Chester studio.
