    Real Opal

    Ethiopian Opal

Natural Welo opal from Ethiopia, known for its play of colour – flashes of pink, green and gold that move as the stone catches the light. Every stone is unique.

    Mexican Fire Opal

A naturally warm opal, prized for its colour rather than flashes.

    Created Opal

Lab-grown white and blue opal with CZ accents, set in 925 sterling silver with rhodium, 14K gold or 14K rose gold plating.

The opal rings, the Ethiopian Opal Stud Earrings and every created opal piece ship from stock – order by noon on a working day for same-day dispatch, otherwise they go out the next working day.

Real or Created Opal: How to Tell

This page lists real and created opal separately, and every product page says which kind of opal it is. Real opal is natural and mined, so every stone is unique. Created opal is grown in a laboratory with the same play of colour, at an everyday price. Both are beautiful – we simply make sure you always know which one you are choosing.

    Opal, October's Birthstone

By tradition, opal is the birthstone for October and the stone for the 14th wedding anniversary, which makes an opal piece a thoughtful gift for an October birthday or fourteen years together. For more on opal, read our Ethiopian opal guide or our October birthstones guide, or browse October Birthstone Jewellery.

    Caring for Opal

Opal is a soft stone, and Ethiopian opal is hydrophane – it can absorb water, which temporarily dulls its colour play. Take your opal off before showering, swimming or applying perfume and lotion, wipe it with a dry cloth after wear and store it in its pouch or box.
