What is Aquamarine?

Aquamarine is the birthstone of March, but it also has a much deeper spiritual meaning that can be applied to anyone. It is a stone of love, capturing the essence of such raw, pure emotion in total clarity. It is also connected to the throat chakra, and aids in clear communication with the world around you.

Healing Properties

Aquamarine is believed to have healing properties associated with the throat. There is a deep connection to that part of the body, as it is strongly tied to the throat chakra as well. It helps to soothe sore throats, and eliminate inflammation of the glands and thyroid. Helps reducing the effects of conditions such as hayfever and certain allergies that have symptoms that can be felt in the throat. It is also believed to offer protection for babies during pregnancy, by ensuring that they have a safe journey full of growth and abundance.

More broadly, this stone helps to boost the immune system of the wearer, especially after they have been sick. Aquamarines help to promote new growth and development in the body, and can balance out hormones.

Association with Chakras

Aquamarine is strongly associated with the throat chakra. The throat chakra is connected to communication – how we can speak clearly so that others may hear us, and how we can hear them in return. Wearing aquamarine can help when someones feel as though they are not understood, or as though they are not expressing themselves correctly. Using aquamarine to align your throat chakra opens up your communication channels, not just verbally but spiritually and mentally as well. Others will become more aware of not just what you are trying to say, but how you express yourself, and how you respond to them.

The aquamarine is at its most powerful when worn as a necklace, directly over the throat to connect to the corresponding chakra. But the power it has aligning the throat chakra can still be felt when aquamarine is worn as a bracelet, earrings, or a ring. The stone is a powerful tool, and this is not negated by where on the body the aquamarine is held.

The act of giving

Aquamarine will always be well received by friends and family who have birthdays in March. But it’s also a gift that can be given purely because the receiver is special to you. Giving someone an aquamarine stone is a token of love, which is why it is often used in engagement rings, or wedding anniversary gifts. It represents not only your attachment to them, but your hope that they see clearly your desire for them to succeed spiritually and emotionally.

Origins of Aquamarine

Aquamarine can be found naturally occurring in Asia, Africa, South America, and even North America (specifically in Colorado). Because of this, the gemstone was won by a variety of different cultures throughout time, as they ascribed their own meanings and importance to it.

The term “aquamarine” comes from the Latin phrase “aqua marina”, which means seawater. The bright blues and greens of this stone have such strong connections to the ocean, something that is immediately obvious upon looking at them. Usually, the gems can display clarity as soon as they are mined, before they are even cleaned, showcasing their stunning colors. Sailors often used to take aquamarine with them on long and dangerous voyages, because it was believed that the stone would help calm the seas and offer them safe passage.

Aquamarine was also believed to be associated with love in a number of different cultures. People believed that the stone was so clear and pure that it could absorb powerful new love. It was gifted to couples as a wedding present because the stone retained this love. In times of marital struggle, couples could return to the stone to be reminded of the love they shared, and feel proof that it can still exist today. Romans also believed that if you carved a frog into an aquamarine, it would transform enemies into friends. The stone would absorb the negativity and metamorphosize it into friendship, the same way that tadpoles turn into frogs.

Today, we associate the term aquamarine with bright blue, clear stones. However initially, it was the gems that were slightly greener and more ocean-colored that were favored, as they bore a stronger resemblance to the sea they got their name from. You can also find aquamarines that are almost completely clear, or take on a different shade, such as pink. Where in the world your aquamarine comes from often plays a major part in its hue. For example, aquamarines mined high in the mountains of Pakistan are believed to be some of the clearest in the world.

Spiritual Properties

Aquamarine is also known as a stone of love and friendship. It helps to calm and filter unwanted emotions, leaving the wearer surrounded only by positive love and energy. The gem allows wearers to become more attuned to their own spirituality, and the love they have to place out into the world. It makes people aware of their own sensitive nature, but in a way that allows them to embrace all of the good aspects of feeling the world so intensely. Sensitivity enables people to connect with others on a deeper level, and experience their joys with them, so much more strongly.

As it is connected to the throat chakra and personal communication, it allows wearers to feel free to be themselves. It allows people to communicate open and honestly about their innermost thoughts, not just with others, but with themselves. Possessing the clarity to understand oneself is the first step to then being able to communicate that with others.

Not only that, but it helps people to see more clearly. The clear blues and greens of aquamarine provide clarity and heightened awareness in users so that they can seek the truth in every situation. This relates not only to oneself, but to the world around as well. It presents wisdom and understanding, so that the wearer may see the true meaning of actions.
