Zodiac Jewellery Meaning: Star Signs, Star Maps and Tarot Explained

Zodiac jewellery carries your star sign — the symbol astrology links to the date you were born, and to the traits said to come with it. That is why it outlasts a passing trend: a star sign is personal. It stands for a birthday, a person, or a moment that mattered, and it keeps meaning something long after the season's styles have moved on.

Below, we explain what each type of zodiac jewellery means — star sign pieces, constellations, star maps and tarot cards — and how to choose the right one for yourself or as a gift.

What Does a Zodiac Necklace Mean?

A zodiac necklace shows one of the twelve star signs of Western astrology. Each sign covers roughly a month of the year and is traditionally linked to a set of qualities. Wearing your sign is a quiet way of carrying those qualities with you — or of celebrating someone else's.

Star sign Dates Traits astrology associates with it
Aries 21 March – 19 April Courage, energy, drive
Taurus 20 April – 20 May Loyalty, patience, calm
Gemini 21 May – 20 June Curiosity, wit, adaptability
Cancer 21 June – 22 July Care, intuition, devotion
Leo 23 July – 22 August Confidence, warmth, generosity
Virgo 23 August – 22 September Thoughtfulness, precision, kindness
Libra 23 September – 22 October Balance, harmony, fairness
Scorpio 23 October – 21 November Passion, determination, depth
Sagittarius 22 November – 21 December Optimism, adventure, honesty
Capricorn 22 December – 19 January Ambition, discipline, resilience
Aquarius 20 January – 18 February Originality, independence, vision
Pisces 19 February – 20 March Empathy, imagination, sensitivity

Our Zodiac Necklace is available for all twelve signs, engraved on a polished round disc.

Zodiac Symbol or Constellation — What Is the Difference?

Every star sign can be shown in two ways. The zodiac symbol is the small glyph astrologers use as shorthand — the ram's horns of Aries, the twin pillars of Gemini, the wave of Aquarius. The constellation is the pattern of real stars in the night sky that gives the sign its name.

A symbol is bolder and instantly recognisable; a constellation is subtler, a scatter of stars that only the wearer may know the meaning of. Both of ours carry the sign on a round disc: see the Constellation Zodiac Sign Necklace, or for the wrist, the Zodiac Sign Bracelet and Constellation Bracelet.

What Is a Star Map Necklace?

A star map goes one step further than a star sign. Instead of a whole month of the year, it captures a single moment: when you order, you give us the place — a city, street or postcode — and the date, plus the time if you know it. We generate the star map for that moment — the stars as they appeared in the sky above that spot — and engrave it.

That makes a star map one of the most personal gifts you can give. Popular moments include:

  • the night a couple met, got engaged or married
  • the day a baby was born
  • a birthday, graduation or first home
  • a date to remember someone who has passed away

Choose the Star Map Constellation Necklace, the Star Map Constellation Bracelet or, for him, our Star Map Constellation Cufflinks.

Tarot Card Jewellery: The Sun and The High Priestess

Tarot jewellery draws on the imagery of the tarot deck, where each card carries its own meaning. We make our Custom Tarot Card Necklace in two of the best-loved cards:

  • The Sun — joy, success, warmth and positivity. A card of good days and confidence, often chosen as a celebration or a lift for someone going through a hard time.
  • The High Priestess — intuition, inner wisdom and spiritual insight. A card for trusting your instincts, often chosen by people who read tarot themselves.

How to Choose the Right Piece

  • For a birthday — a zodiac or constellation piece. All you need is their date of birth.
  • For an anniversary, wedding or new baby — a star map, set to the date and place that matter.
  • For someone drawn to tarot or spirituality — The Sun or The High Priestess tarot necklace.
  • For him — the zodiac necklace or star map cufflinks. See more in Personalised Gifts for Him.

Most pieces can also be engraved on the back with a name, date or short message, which turns a star sign into a gift for one person in particular.

What Our Zodiac Jewellery Is Made Of

Our zodiac, star map and tarot pieces are made from 316L stainless steel with a silver-tone, 18K gold or 18K rose gold PVD finish. It is hard-wearing, water-resistant and tarnish-free, so it suits everyday wear. They are not sterling silver — if you are looking for solid silver, see our Sterling Silver Jewellery. Each piece is engraved to order in our Chester studio.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if someone's birthday falls on the cusp of two signs?

The dates where one sign ends and the next begins can shift by a day from year to year. If a birthday falls right on the edge, check the sign for that exact year, or choose a star map — which is set to the exact date, so there is no cusp to worry about.

Can I buy zodiac jewellery if I don't know their star sign?

Yes — you only need their date of birth. Match it against the dates in the table above.

Is a star map the real sky?

Yes. We generate it from the place and date you enter when you order — and the time, if you add one — so it shows the stars as they were positioned above that place at that moment.
